Our Take

Why We Recommend Mara Nyika Camp

We visited Mara Plains and Mara Nyika back to back, and Mara Nyika was the unexpected highlight of the trip. That’s exactly the kind of experience worth saying plainly.Set in the 50,000 acre Naboisho Conservancy, the second largest private conservancy in the greater Maasai Mara, Mara Nyika has just four suites beneath flat topped acacias, connected by elevated walkways with a unique treetop feel. “Naboisho” means “coming together” in Maasai Maa, reflecting the 500 landowners who formed the conservancy and the wildlife that gathers here year round. The big cat viewing is exceptional, while the guiding ranks among the best we’ve experienced in Kenya.

Camp Experience

A First Night That Doesn't Feel Like a Layover

The Camp

A Treehouse Under Canvas

Four spacious canvas suites and one family suite sit privately beneath an acacia canopy, connected by raised wooden walkways that create a treehouse feel. The open-sided lounge overlooks the plains, while the Sambuk Suite offers a private pool and dedicated safari vehicle for added exclusivity.

The Setting

Naboisho — Coming Together

Formed by 500 Maasai landowners, the 50,000 acre Naboisho Conservancy sits on the western edge of the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem, bordering the National Reserve. As the region’s second largest private conservancy, it feels wild yet uncrowded, with diverse habitats of open plains, rocky hills and acacia woodland. Mara Nyika sits in a sheltered western valley, giving the camp a peaceful, secluded feel away from the open plains.

Firsthand

Our Firsthand Experience

Firsthand

Our Firsthand Experience

The 45-minute transfer from Mara Plains to Mara Nyika turned into our first unforgettable encounter. Our guide spotted cheetahs on the hunt and suggested a detour. We agreed and watched a cheetah take down a Thomson’s gazelle, with her two cubs feeding beside her. It was the first of five kills and several near misses we witnessed over three days.

Naboisho is known for its big cats, but the experience exceeded expectations. Sam, our guide, tracked wildlife with remarkable patience and knowledge. On our final morning, we spent an hour with a pride of over 20 lions as they groomed and played. We also witnessed the birth of an elephant calf — a moment that needs no embellishment.

Safari Experiences

What You Can Actually Do Here

Naboisho permits off-road tracking, night drives and walking safaris. Combined with reserve access on longer stays, Mara Nyika offers exceptional safari variety.

Game Drives

Night Drives

Walking Safari

Hot Air Balloon

Maasai Cultural Visits

Photography

Game Drives

Morning and evening drives through the Naboisho Conservancy in open 4×4 vehicles. Off-road tracking is permitted throughout which means sightings are followed, not watched from a distance. The conservancy’s mix of open plains, rocky hills and woodland produces varied drives rather than the same circuit repeated.

Night Drives

Permitted within the conservancy after dark. The nocturnal shift  leopard, hyena, aardvark, genet, serval reveals a completely different face of the Mara that daylight drives cannot. One of the most compelling reasons to choose a conservancy camp over a reserve property.

Walking Safari

Guided walks through the conservancy with an armed ranger and Maasai guide. A slower, closer engagement with the landscape tracks, insects, birdlife and the smaller details that a vehicle moves past without pausing.

Hot Air Balloon

Sunrise balloon flights over the Mara can be arranged. Charged separately and booked in advance. The conservancy’s position makes for varied and uncrowded ballooning compared to the reserve’s popular flight corridors.

Maasai Cultural Visits

Guided visits to neighbouring Maasai villages  the 500 landowners who formed the conservancy are the community the camp most directly supports. Cultural visits cover traditions, crafts and daily life and are arranged through camp.

Photography

Canon camera body with 100–400mm and 24–70mm lenses per suite, downloaded to a memory stick on departure. The conservancy’s off-road access and low vehicle density makes Mara Nyika one of the strongest photographic bases in the greater Mara.

Wildlife

Wildlife You May Encounter

The Naboisho Conservancy is renowned for its big cat sightings, particularly lions, leopards and cheetahs. Established through a partnership with Maasai landowners who pooled their land for conservation, the conservancy balances wildlife protection with traditional pastoral livelihoods through designated livestock corridors. This shared landscape supports rich wildlife populations and reflects the coexistence of Maasai communities and wildlife.

Conservation

More Than a Safari

The Naboisho Conservancy was established by 500 Maasai landowners who chose to remove livestock from their land in exchange for conservation fees from the tourism partners operating within it. Each guest’s stay supports those families directly  the conservancy model provides a sustainable income that makes wildlife more valuable on the land than cattle. Mara Nyika’s conservation levy, charged nightly alongside the Great Plains Foundation levy, funds ongoing ranger operations, wildlife monitoring and community programmes across the conservancy. The conservancy’s approach  Naboisho means “coming together”  has proven one of the most effective community led conservation models in the greater Mara ecosystem.

Best Time to Visit

Seasons at Mara Nyika Camp

January – March

Dry and warm with excellent visibility across the plains. Cheetah are highly active in the open grassland. Quieter than peak season with strong resident big cat populations.

April – May

Long rains. The conservancy turns lush green. Significantly fewer guests and lower rates. Some camps close; Mara Nyika remains open. An underrated time to visit for those who don’t mind occasional afternoon showers.

June – October

Dry season and the Great Migration’s northern movement through the Mara ecosystem. Peak big cat activity, highest demand and the strongest season for combining conservancy drives with Reserve river crossings.

November – December

Short rains clear quickly. Green landscape, strong resident game and substantially fewer vehicles than the July–October peak. Good value for the quality of experience.

Our Recommendation

Naboisho’s resident wildlife makes Mara Nyika a rewarding year-round safari destination. Our first choice is June to October for excellent wildlife viewing and the possibility of witnessing the Great Migration in the wider Mara ecosystem. November and December are our next preference, offering lush landscapes, rewarding game viewing and fewer vehicles. January to March is also an excellent alternative, particularly for resident big cat sightings.

Our Take

What We Love

The guiding and the big cats in that order. Naboisho’s cheetah and lion populations are exceptional, but expert tracking makes the difference. Mara Nyika’s guides are among the finest we’ve encountered in Kenya. Add the camp’s treetop feel elevated walkways, canvas beneath the acacia canopy and the stream below & you have an atmosphere unlike any other Mara camp we’ve visited. No faults whatsoever.

What To Know

This is a small camp  Four suites  + one family suites  which means availability moves quickly in peak season. Book early, particularly for July to October travel. The minimum stay is two nights; we strongly recommend three. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is accessible on longer stays but is not the primary draw here  the conservancy wildlife is the reason to come.

Who We'd Send Here

Ideal for travellers seeking exceptional big cat sightings, couples wanting an intimate private camp atmosphere, and families with children aged six and above. It also suits those combining the Mara with another conservancy camp. Mara Nyika and Mara Plains make a natural pairing and, in our experience, one of the strongest two camp Kenya itineraries.

How Long We'd Stay

Three nights. Two is the minimum and covers the essentials. Three gives you a full day for each ecosystem mood  early morning, full day drive and a night drive  without any of them feeling cut short.

Questions

Before You Ask

The six things travellers ask us most about Mara Nyika Camp.

1. How does Mara Nyika compare to Mara Plains?

Different conservancies, different atmospheres. Mara Plains is on the Maasai Mara Reserve boundary with the lowest vehicle density in the greater Mara and the highest big cat concentration. Mara Nyika is in Naboisho  larger conservancy, more habitat variety, equally exceptional big cat viewing and a treetop camp character that is unique to this property. We visited both back to back and recommend doing the same.

Six years and older in the main suites and family suites. Child rates apply for one child aged 15 and under sharing with two adults.

Yes  drives into the reserve are available, particularly for longer stays and during Great Migration season for river crossing access. The conservancy is the primary game viewing area; the reserve is an addition rather than the foundation of the experience.

No  it is arranged separately and charged additionally. Balloon flights should be booked in advance as availability is limited in peak season.

Each suite includes a Canon camera body with 100–400mm and 24–70mm lenses for use throughout the stay. Photos are downloaded to a personal memory stick on departure.

A 45-minute scheduled flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport to the Naboisho Conservancy airstrip, followed by a short road transfer to camp. Return airstrip transfers are included in the rate. Minimum two-night stay required.
