A Walk on the Wild Side…

Since 1990, this itinerary has defined the “wilderness experience.” You aren’t just observing nature; you are part of it. The journey covers approximately 10km a day across varied terrain from river crossings to open plains led by Zambia’s legendary guides and an armed scout. The camp moves with you, ensuring you are always in the thick of the action, far from roads, other vehicles, and the modern world. This is the South Luangwa as it was a century ago.

Day 1

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Mfuwe Airport to Nkwali Camp, located on private land overlooking the National Park. It’s the perfect transition into the bush. Enjoy a welcome drink gazing out over the Luangwa River, perhaps spotting your first hippo or elephant. Depending on your arrival, you’ll head out for an afternoon game drive or a night drive to spot elusive nocturnal creatures like leopards and genets. Tonight, you sleep in a chalet with open-fronted views of the river.

Days 2-7

After an early breakfast, you drive north to the remote Mupamadzi River area to begin the walking leg of your safari. For the next five nights, you are fully mobile. The camp comfortable walk-in tents with full bedding and shared bucket showers moves daily or every two days. Days are spent tracking big game on foot, learning to identify spoor, and observing the “Little Five” that go unnoticed from a vehicle. You’ll experience shallow river crossings, lunches under mahogany trees, and evenings around a campfire with nothing but the sounds of the African night.

Days 7-8

On your final walking morning, you’ll cross the river to meet a vehicle that whisks you to one of premier camps either the historic Nsefu Camp or the tented luxury of Tena Tena. Here, you can wash off the dust of the bush with a hot shower and relax in supreme comfort. Enjoy a final game drive or simply sit by the riverbank watching the resident wildlife. On Day 8, after a last breakfast in the bush, you transfer back to Mfuwe Airport, your camera full of photos and your soul recharged.
