This nine-day safari links together four of northern Tanzania’s most celebrated regions in one seamless journey. Start with a peaceful night in Arusha to shake off the travel fatigue before heading into elephant country around Tarangire, where ancient baobabs dot the horizon and wildlife gathers around seasonal water sources. Next, experience the drama of the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO-listed caldera packed with game. Finally, fly into the private Singita Grumeti reserve on the Serengeti’s western corridor, where superb guiding, refined hospitality, and sweeping plains create a memorable final chapter to your safari.
Day 1
Arusha After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are met and driven to your lodge in Arusha, a journey of around an hour and a half with views of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru on a clear day. Settle into the tranquil gardens of Legendary Lodge and ease into the slower rhythm of safari life. Depending on your arrival time, spend the afternoon birdwatching on the grounds, joining a coffee-tasting experience on a nearby estate, browsing a local market, or simply relaxing by the pool before dinner and a restful night.
Days 2-3
Chem Chem Concession (Tarangire Area) After breakfast in Arusha, head to the local airport for a scenic flight across the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara Airstrip. From here, a safari vehicle from Chem Chem Lodge collects you and drives you into the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, a key corridor linking Tarangire National Park with Lake Manyara. Over the next two days you explore this quiet, wildlife-rich corner of northern Tanzania. Enjoy guided game drives in search of elephant, lion, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and more, and keep an eye out for the area’s prolific birdlife around the lake and acacia woodlands. In between activities, return to the lodge for leisurely meals, a swim, or sundowners looking out over the plains.
Days 4-5
Ngorongoro Conservation Area Leaving Chem Chem after breakfast, you travel by road back towards Lake Manyara Airstrip and continue through the small farms and coffee plantations around Karatu. As you enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the road climbs the forested crater wall to the rim, where sweeping views of the caldera open up below you. Your home for the next two nights is the celebrated & Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, perched high above the crater floor. With a full day to explore, start early to make the most of the soft morning light and active wildlife in the crater. Descend to the floor for an unhurried game drive in search of lion, elephant, buffalo, and the rare black rhino. Pause for a picnic lunch, perhaps beside a hippo-filled pool, before continuing your exploration. In the afternoon you ascend the steep crater walls once more and return to the lodge to freshen up, enjoy a drink at the bar, and share stories with fellow guests over dinner.
Days 6-8
Singita Serengeti Grumeti After breakfast, your journey turns towards the Serengeti. Travel back to Lake Manyara Airstrip and board a flight bound for the private Singita Grumeti reserve on the north-western edge of the Serengeti. On arrival a guide from Singita Faru Faru Lodge welcomes you and transfers you to the lodge, where contemporary comfort meets sweeping views of the savannah. These days are dedicated to exploring one of East Africa’s most wildlife-rich regions. Typically you head out on game drives in the early morning and again in the late afternoon, returning to the lodge during the warmest hours for lunch, a swim, or a siesta. The reserve is known for big cats, large herds of plains game, and, at certain times of year, dramatic Great Migration sightings. Evenings are spent around the firepit under star-filled skies before sitting down to dinner and another peaceful night in the bush.
Day 9
End of Itinerary Enjoy a final breakfast in camp before saying goodbye to the Serengeti. You are driven to the nearby airstrip for your flight back to Kilimanjaro International Airport, likely stopping at a few other airstrips along the way to collect or drop off fellow travellers. Arriving around midday, you collect your luggage and check in for your onward international flight, carrying home vivid memories of Tanzania’s northern wilderness.
