The best African safari honeymoon is about 12 nights: roughly eight on safari and four on a beach, a two-thirds to one-third split that leaves time to unwind. Choose the region by your wedding month. East Africa is at its best from June to October and in January and February. Southern Africa shines from May to October. Mauritius and the Seychelles work as beach add-ons almost all year.
For eight safari nights, budget about $8,400 to $24,400 for two before flights, at camp rates of $500 to $1,500 per person per night. Some lodges cut one partner’s accommodation by half for honeymooners, so always ask.

Why a safari makes such a good honeymoon
A safari gives you something most honeymoons do not: shared moments you could never plan. Picture sitting quietly beside a waterhole at sunrise, listening to fish eagles as elephants come out of the mist to drink, then watching the sun set over the savanna as lions call in the distance.
The best camps are also small and private by design. Phinda Rock Lodge, where we stayed in South Africa, has just six suites, each with its own plunge pool. Mara Plains in Kenya has seven tented suites with copper bathtubs. Madikwe Hills and Leopard Hills both gave us suites with plunge pools and long views over the bush.
Then comes the beach. After days of early game drives, a few nights on the Indian Ocean turn an adventure into a real rest.
Where to go for your wedding month
Your wedding date is fixed, so let it choose the region. This table draws on our month-by-month safari guide and our guide to Africa’s best beaches.
| Honeymoon month | Best safari region | Beach pairing | Why it works |
| January to February | Southern Serengeti in Tanzania, or Kenya | Zanzibar or Kenya’s coast | Calving season and East Africa’s short dry spell |
| March to April | South Africa and Botswana | Mauritius or the Seychelles | Green-season value in the south while East Africa’s long rains close many camps |
| May | Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe | Mauritius | The dry season starts, the Okavango floodwater arrives and Victoria Falls runs high |
| June to September | Kenya’s Mara, Tanzania, Botswana or South Africa | Zanzibar, Kenya’s coast or Mozambique’s islands | Peak dry season everywhere, so book early |
| October | Southern Africa or Tanzania | Zanzibar or the Seychelles | Animals gather at water, though Botswana and Zimbabwe run very hot |
| November | Serengeti or South Africa | Mauritius, the Seychelles or Cape Town | Herds return to Tanzania and newborn antelope appear in the south |
| December | South Africa, including the Eastern Cape | Cape Town or Mauritius | Lush landscapes and Cape Town’s summer beach season |
Adding gorillas? Rwanda and Uganda trek best from June to September and from December to February. Permits often sell out 6 to 12 months ahead, as our safari and gorilla guide explains.
Pick your honeymoon style
Most couples fit one of four styles. Start here, then match the month.
| Your style | Where we would send you | Beach | Why |
| First safari, want it easy | South Africa: a Sabi Sands or Madikwe lodge, plus Cape Town | Cape Town or Mauritius | Short transfers and malaria-free Madikwe. See our Kruger vs Sabi Sands guide |
| Migration chasers | Kenya or Tanzania, timed to the herds | Zanzibar, or Kenya’s Diani or Lamu | The Great Migration is the headline. See Kenya vs Tanzania |
| Adventure couple | Tanzania with gorilla trekking in Rwanda, or a walking safari in Zambia | Zanzibar | Tanzania with Rwanda is the pairing honeymooners ask us for most |
| Slow luxury | Two small camps in Botswana or Kenya, three or more nights each | The Seychelles or Mauritius | Fewer moves, more privacy and time for the plunge pool |
The best safari and beach pairings
The smoothest pairings are the ones with short, reliable flights between bush and beach:
- Tanzania with Zanzibar or Mnemba Island. The classic combination, with easy connections. Mnemba is a private island with low guest numbers and excellent snorkeling. Our 10-day Tanzania safari and beach adventure follows this route.
- Kenya with Diani or Lamu.Beach and Swahili culture on the same coast.
- Southern Africa with Mozambique’s islands.Remote islands with big marine life and strong diving.
- Southern Africa with Mauritius.Calm lagoon beaches and polished resorts. After our Zambia safari, we flew from Johannesburg to Mauritius and stayed at The Oberoi north of Port Louis. It was superb, but most of its beach areas are rocky, so ask about the beach itself, not just the hotel.
- Kenya or Tanzania with the Seychelles.Granite-framed coves such as Anse Source d’Argent make it a favorite for honeymooners and photographers.
East Africa’s coast is best from June to October and from January to March. Mauritius and the Seychelles work broadly year-round. Cape Town’s beaches are a November to March choice.
What a safari honeymoon costs for two
Safari prices are almost always quoted per person, so couples need to double them. Here is the safari part of the trip for two people over eight nights, using the per-night tiers and the tipping norm of about $25 per person per night from our safari cost guide. These are illustrations, not quotes.
| Camp rate per person per night | 8 nights for two | Tips for two | Safari subtotal |
| $500 | $8,000 | $400 | $8,400 |
| $1,000 | $16,000 | $400 | $16,400 |
| $1,500 | $24,000 | $400 | $24,400 |
These totals assume camps that include meals and game drives, as most luxury camps do. On top come international flights, bush flights between camps, travel insurance with medical evacuation cover and your beach hotel.
Honeymoon offers can change the math. Some operators take 50% off one partner’s accommodation. Wilderness, for example, requires travel within six months of the wedding and proof of marriage. andBeyond advertises a similar saving. If such an offer covers the full camp rate, the $1,000 tier drops from $16,000 to $12,000 for the eight nights. Terms change often, so check them when you book.
Questions to ask a lodge or planner
Ask these before you pay a deposit and get the answers in writing.
- Do you offer a honeymoon rate? What are the terms? Ask about the window after the wedding, proof of marriage and which camps qualify.
- How many suites does the camp have? Six or seven suites feels very different from twenty.
- Does our suite have a plunge pool? Is it heated? The plunge pools at Leopard Hills and Madikwe Hills were not.
- Can we have a private vehicle or a private dinner? A private vehicle is usually an extra cost.
- What is included? Check drinks, laundry, park fees and transfers. At Lion Sands, laundry was not included.
- Which days do the flights between safari and beach run? Some routes fly only a few days a week.
- Is the beach at our hotel good for swimming, or mostly rock?
Mistakes honeymooners make
- Too many one-night stops.Every move costs half a day. We plan at least three nights per camp, which also gives about six game drives.
- Ignoring the time difference.East Africa runs 7 to 8 hours ahead of US Eastern time and South Africa 6 to 7. On Southern Africa trips we always spend the first night at a Johannesburg airport hotel before flying on.
- Putting the beach first.Jet lag makes dawn wake-ups easy, so use it on safari. On our Zambia trip we ended in Mauritius, where the beach became our recovery.
- Booking peak season late.Masai Mara lodges book months ahead for the migration. Gorilla permits often sell out 6 to 12 months in advance.
- Mismatched names. If either of you is changing your name, book flights in the name on the passport you will travel with.
- Packing only for the heat. From June to September in Southern Africa, open-vehicle drives are cold at dawn and after dark, so bring warm layers.
Why trust this guide
We are Pranav and Anita. For us, Africa has never just been a destination. Over 12 years and across 7 countries, we have stayed at more than 50 camps and lodges, often as a couple chasing the same quiet moments you are planning now.
A few that stay with us:
- At Phinda, our guide said he had heard of a leopard nearby. We set off expecting a sighting and found a beautifully set dinner waiting in the middle of the bush instead.
- In Kenya’s Olare Motorogi Conservancy, we started the day with a hot air balloon ride over the Mara, then skipped the group champagne breakfast for a private one by a river bend with our guide.
- After our safari in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa, we flew to Mauritius for a few slow days by the ocean.
We plan each journey the way we would plan our own, with the same care and standards. Your honeymoon is not a template to us. Tell us your wedding date and let us shape the trip around you.
