Our Take

Why We Recommend River Trees

Our Take

Why We Recommend River Trees

We call RiverTrees a transfer night  and we mean that as a compliment. Most Arusha stopovers are functional. RiverTrees is something else entirely. Set on ten acres of gardens along the Usa River, with birdsong replacing traffic noise and a restaurant drawing on old family recipes, it changes the tone of a safari from the moment you arrive. The coffee farm heritage is still in the air. So is the calm.

Camp Experience

A First Night That Doesn't Feel Like a Layover

The Inn

Coffee Farm Heritage, Riverside Cottages, Log Fires

Rustic cottages sit among tall trees and along the Usa River, each designed individually across ten acres of lush, well tended gardens. The restaurant overlooks green lawns and serves meals cooked with fresh vegetables from the garden, oven fired pizzas and locally grown Tanzanian coffees. Candlelit dinners are served by the fireplace or under the stars, watched over by resident owls.

The Setting

The Foothills of Mt. Meru, Between Two Airports

RiverTrees sits on the Usa River, 20km east of Arusha town and 25 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The grounds are a natural extension of Mt. Meru’s sloping foothills. On a clear day both Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro are visible from the property. Arusha National Park is a 20–30 minute drive from the front door

close enough for a morning excursion before a connecting flight.

Our Firsthand Experience

Firsthand

Our Firsthand Experience

We arrived from Nairobi on a quick Wilson Airport to Kilimanjaro flight  seamless, thanks to our Asilia transfer on the ground. RiverTrees was what we needed after a long day of travel quiet gardens, a proper dinner and a bed that earned the name.

The following morning we transferred to Arusha Airport for the Serengeti flight. The Asilia Pole Pole Lounge made even that easy  staff tracked the departure, walked us to the gate, and sent us into Tanzania feeling looked after from the first hour.

Conservation

More Than a Safari

RiverTrees is a privately owned inn whose ten-acre gardens function as an active sanctuary for the birds and small wildlife indigenous to the Usa River area. The kitchen sources vegetables, herbs and fruit directly from the inn’s own garden, reducing supply chain impact and keeping meals genuinely seasonal. The property supports the surrounding Usa River community through local employment and connects guests to nearby village visits as part of its activity programme.

Best Time to Visit

Seasons at River Trees

January – March

Dry and warm. Clear mornings with the best chance of simultaneous Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro views from the gardens.

April – May

Long rains. Gardens at their most lush. Fewer guests and lower rates the inn remains open.

June – October

Dry season. The most popular period for northern Tanzania safaris; RiverTrees books out quickly as a start or end stop.

November – December

Short rains pass quickly. A quieter, greener period with good availability and pleasant temperatures.

Our Recommendation

RiverTrees works year-round as a transit stop. If you have two nights, combine it with a morning in Arusha National Park  the park is at its most rewarding in the dry months.

Our Take

What We Love

The ten-acre gardens do what very few Arusha properties manage  they actually quiet you down. Birdsong instead of traffic, a river instead of a road, a restaurant cooking from its own garden. For a transfer night, it sets the right tone for everything that follows

What To Know

This is not a safari camp  wildlife viewing is in the gardens and on day excursions. Guests who arrive expecting game drives from the front door will need to reframe expectations. It is a country inn, not a bush camp, and earns its place on that basis.

Who We'd Send Here

Anyone opening or closing a northern Tanzania itinerary who wants more than a hotel room in Arusha town. Families needing space, birdwatchers, and anyone with a spare day who wants Arusha National Park without changing property.

How Long We'd Stay

One to two nights. One works perfectly as a transit stop. Two allows Arusha National Park in the morning and a proper dinner under the stars.
