Combining a Luxury Safari with Gorilla Trekking 1 | Travel Africa & More

Combining a Luxury Safari with Gorilla Trekking

There are two trips that top almost every traveler’s bucket list when they look at a map of Africa. The first is the classic “Big Five” safari, where you drive across the open plains of the Serengeti or the Masai Mara. The second is the intimate, life-changing experience of sitting a few feet away from a silverback mountain gorilla in the thick forests of East Africa.

For a long time, travelers treated these as separate vacations. You did the safari one year, and maybe the trekking a few years later.

But why choose?

In 2025, combining a luxury savanna safari with a gorilla trekking expedition is not just possible; it is the ultimate way to experience the sheer diversity of the continent. You get the golden savannah and the misty jungle. You get the adrenaline of the game drive and the humbleness of the trek.

However, planning a multi-country trip like this involves moving parts, flight logistics, and permit timing. Here is how to plan the perfect dual-destination itinerary without the stress.

Why This Combination Works

The beauty of this combination lies in the contrast.

A traditional safari in Kenya or Tanzania is vast. You are in a 4×4 vehicle, scanning the horizon for lions, elephants, and cheetahs. It is dry, open, and focuses on the predator-prey dynamic.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda is the complete opposite. It is vertical, green, and quiet. You are on foot, pushing through dense vegetation. There are no vehicles here—just you, your guide, and the forest sounds.

Putting them together gives you a complete picture of East Africa’s wildlife. Plus, after a few days of sitting in a safari vehicle, your legs will appreciate the hike!

The Logistics: Connecting the Dots

The biggest question we get at Travel Africa & More is about logistics. How do you actually get from the open plains to the rainforest?

Luckily, regional flight connections have improved drastically. You don’t need to fly back to a major hub like Johannesburg or Europe to switch sides.

  • From Kenya (Nairobi): There are short, direct flights into Kigali (Rwanda) and Entebbe (Uganda). You can have breakfast in Nairobi and be at your lodge near the volcanoes by dinner.
  • From Tanzania (Serengeti/Kilimanjaro): Direct flights connect the Serengeti region (usually via Kilimanjaro or Arusha) to Kigali. A popular route is to finish your Great Migration safari in the morning, fly to Rwanda in the afternoon, and prep for your trek the next day.

Choosing Your Gorilla Destination: Rwanda or Uganda?

When adding the “jungle” portion to your trip, you generally have two choices. Both are incredible, but they offer different vibes.

Rwanda: The Luxury Option

If your priority is convenience and high-end luxury, Rwanda is often the top choice.

  • The Vibe: Volcanoes National Park is just a 2.5-hour drive from the capital, Kigali, on good roads. It feels seamless and polished.
  • The Lodges: Rwanda is home to some of the most exclusive lodges on the continent, such as Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla’s Nest. These properties offer boot-cleaning services, heated plunge pools, and massages included in the rate—perfect for soothing sore muscles after a hike.
  • The Trek: generally considered slightly less strenuous than Uganda, though “easy” is relative when hiking a volcano!

Uganda: The Adventure Option

If you want a wilder, more rugged experience, look at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

  • The Vibe: It takes a bit more effort to get here (usually a small light aircraft flight from Entebbe), but the payoff is a sense of true isolation. It feels remote and untouched.
  • The Lodges: While slightly more affordable than Rwanda, Uganda has heavily invested in luxury recently. Lodges like Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp offer incredible comfort right inside the park.
  • The Trek: The terrain is steeper and the vegetation thicker (hence the name “Impenetrable”), making it a rewarding challenge for active travelers.

Perfect Pairings: Two Itinerary Ideas

1. The “East African Classic” (Tanzania + Rwanda)

This is our most requested combination for honeymooners and luxury travelers.

  • Start: 5-7 days in Tanzania. Witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti and explore the Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Transfer: Fly from Kilimanjaro or the Serengeti to Kigali.
  • Finish: 3-4 days in Rwanda. Do two gorilla treks (seeing a second family is always worth it) and relax at a high-end lodge.
  • Why it works: The logistics are smooth, and the level of luxury accommodation is consistent throughout the trip.

2. The “Pearl & Plains” (Kenya + Uganda)

This route offers immense value and diversity.

  • Start: 4-6 days in Kenya. Visit the Masai Mara for big cats and perhaps a private conservancy for night drives.
  • Transfer: Fly from Nairobi to Entebbe, then take a scenic light aircraft flight to Bwindi.
  • Finish: 4 days in Uganda. Combine gorilla trekking with a “chimp trek” in Kibale Forest for the ultimate primate experience.
  • Why it works: You get to see the sheer density of wildlife in the Mara and the raw, green beauty of Uganda.

Timing Your Trip

Since this is a significant investment, you want to ensure the weather cooperates.

The best time to do this combo trip is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February.

  • Safari impact: The grass is shorter, making wildlife easier to spot, and animals congregate around water sources.
  • Trekking impact: While it can rain anytime in the rainforest, the trails are much easier to navigate (less mud!) during these dry windows.

If you are looking to save money, the “short rains” in November or April/May can offer lower rates, but be prepared for muddy boots and potentially slippery trekking conditions.

A Note on Packing

Packing for this dual trip requires a bit of strategy because you have two different climates.

  • For the Safari: Light, neutral colors (khaki/tan/green) to blend in. It can be hot during the day.
  • For the Trek: You need “jungle gear.” Think long waterproof trousers, gaiters (to stop ants getting in your boots), sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, gardening gloves (to grab onto thorny branches), and a lightweight rain jacket.
  • Luggage: Remember that small bush planes often have strict weight limits (usually around 33lbs/15kg in soft-sided bags). Most luxury lodges offer laundry services, so you don’t need to overpack.

Ready to Plan?

Combining the open savannah with the deep forest is complex to book on your own. You have to align flight schedules with strict permit availability (gorilla permits often sell out 6-12 months in advance).

At Travel Africa & More, Pranav and Anita specialize in stitching these logistics together seamlessly. We handle the permits, the transfers, and the lodges so all you have to worry about is charging your camera batteries.
